Early March in the South of England usually means bracing for chilly days with temperatures around 8–9°C, with nights dipping to a brisk 2–3°C. But that didn’t stop us from planning a weekend escape to The New Forest—especially since one of our closest friends had just relocated there. A visit long overdue!
We packed for the cold—layers upon layers, ready for the unpredictable English spring. But the first surprise of the weekend came as soon as we arrived on Friday evening: a surprisingly mild 9°C. The next day, our seaside adventure greeted us with an unexpected 17°C—practically unheard of for this time of year! Shedding our winter layers, we were swept up in the lively buzz of the Lymington market, indulging in an impromptu shopping spree.
Lymington was buzzing, market stalls overflowing with fresh produce, independent boutiques tempting us with unique finds, and the picturesque harbour lined with everything from Isle of Wight ferries to jaw-dropping 50-metre yachts. Our friend had recently acquired a yacht that was being refurbished in Hamble. But with the boatyard closed, we had to settle for a different kind of indulgence - we stocked up on delicious treats from the market and headed to the beach for a lazy, sun-soaked lunch.

The journey to the beach took us through breathtaking forest landscapes. We were treated to sights of elegant wild ponies—an iconic feature of The New Forest—but what caught us off guard was the cows. Yes, cows, seeking shade under the trees, clearly just as astonished as we were by the unusually warm weather.
The beach was almost idyllic, aside from an early aerial attack
by a squadron of kamikaze wasps (backed up by Hampshire’s finest flies). But they failed to dampen our spirits, and soon, we were sprawled out on the sand, soaking up the unseasonal sunshine.
Back at the house at our friend’s latest countryside retreat, I couldn’t resist capturing the Four-Wheel Collective in all its glory. Parked like a squadron of mechanical masterpieces were:
A brand-new 2023 Range Rover, an automotive icon that had been highly sought after due to Covid-related production delays and a two-year waiting list. The high demand made it a prime target for organised crime gangs, resulting in widespread thefts and soaring insurance premiums. Our friend initially opted for a Land Rover Defender instead of waiting for the Range Rover. However, within weeks, it was stolen from his driveway. Thankfully, it was recovered, though extensive repairs were needed.
Ultimately, he returned to his original choice and secured the Range Rover, which now features enhanced security systems that have helped lower insurance costs. This latest model is a masterclass in luxury and performance, boasting exceptional refinement, unmatched off-road capability, and a beautifully crafted interior. Its elevated driving position and superior visibility make it second to none. The cherry on top? It’s a hybrid, offering 70–80 miles of electric-only driving before seamlessly switching to petrol—saving a fortune on fuel. An absolute stunner in every sense.
A Porsche 911 (992) Carrera 4, the latest iteration of a car that has led the sports car market for over 70 years. Porsches are renowned for their longevity, quality, and desirability, and this model is no exception. With its striking design, perfectly balanced handling, and a refined yet functional interior, the 992 is a joy to drive. Its signature engine sound is instantly recognizable and delivers exhilarating power. Our friends, longtime Porsche enthusiasts who have previously owned Boxsters and earlier 911s, recently acquired this new 992—and they couldn’t be more thrilled. Everywhere it goes, it turns heads, offering a driving experience that is nothing short of spectacular.
A Land Rover Defender, a modern legend that has revitalized the Land Rover brand since its 2019 reimagining. The Defender has become a sales powerhouse, outselling the company’s other three models combined in 2023. Available in various configurations, our friend’s mid-range model boasts a potent 330bhp engine. Known for its unbeatable off-road capabilities and newfound luxury appeal, the Defender has successfully transitioned from a rugged workhorse to a premium all-terrain vehicle.
Our friend secured his during the COVID period at an exceptional price, thanks to my assistance and a substantial discount, and hasn’t looked back. Now a New Forest local, he finds it the ideal car for seamlessly transitioning between urban commutes and countryside adventures. Every time he starts the engine, he can’t help but smile—proof that he made the perfect choice.
A Mercedes-Benz SL 400 AMG, my car. I remember reading a review when this model launched, describing the SL as "a fascinating, enduring, and exquisite contradiction of a sports car"—and that couldn’t be more accurate.
Mercedes has been producing SL models since the 1950s, with pristine examples of the iconic Gullwing and convertible variants commanding prices of over £1 million. This SL, however, remains a masterpiece in its own right. Whether the metal roof is up or down, the experience is pure magic—miles seem to evaporate effortlessly. This is my third SL, and each has been better than the last. Today’s versions offer more power while being more economical and eco-friendly.
The SL 400 AMG combines breathtaking performance with impeccable build quality, both inside and out. It’s a true grand tourer, balancing opulent luxury with outstanding agility on the road. This car isn’t just a mode of transport—it’s an experience. And as we say in the trade, this one’s a keeper.
Nearly £400,000 worth of engineering excellence, each car a perfect companion for the weekend’s mix of scenic drives and impromptu road trips. With the rumble of engines and birdsong as the soundtrack, we cruised through scenic roads. The biggest challenge? Keeping the speed in check and dodging the local wildlife, who had no interest in giving way!
Fortunately, these cars were built for precision, their handling and braking proving just as important as their horsepower on our mini adventure. No mishaps, no misadventures—just an unforgettable drive through one of the most stunning parts of the country.

As the sun set on our New Forest adventure, we couldn’t help but marvel at how perfect the weekend had been. Great friends, unbelievable weather, and stunning locations—what more could you ask for? The rumble of those powerhouse engines still echoed in our minds, a reminder of the sleek and sophisticated machines that had carried us through the breathtaking countryside. It felt more like a mid-summer getaway than a March retreat.
